Bildqualität und Reaktionsschnelligkeit auf höchstem Niveau

Sowohl die α500 (12,3 Megapixel) als auch die α550 (14,2 Megapixel) sind mit dem neuen Exmor™ CMOS Sensor sowie der besonders leistungsfähigen BIONZ™ Prozessortechnologie ausgestattet. Beide Komponenten sorgen für eine hervorragende Bildqualität, Schnelligkeit und ein extrem reduziertes Bildrauschen. Sie erlauben Aufnahmen mit einer Empfindlichkeit bis zu ISO 12.800 und ermöglichen damit noch mehr Flexibilität bei Freihandaufnahmen auch unter schwierigen Lichtverhältnissen. Dank Serienbildaufnahmen mit bis zu vier Bildern pro Sekunde im Live View-Modus und bis zu fünf Bildern bei Verwendung des optischen Suchers, gelingt es selbst Einsteigern den perfekten Augenblick festzuhalten. Die neue "Serienbildfunktion mit Geschwindigkeitspriorität" (α550) legt die Messlatte sogar noch höher: bis zu sieben Bilder pro Sekunde sind möglich. Dabei werden Schärfe und Belichtung vor der ersten Aufnahme der Serie ermittelt und für die ganze Folge beibehalten. Mit diesem neuen Modus sind dynamische Bildserien ebenso realisierbar wie Portraitaufnahmen, bei denen sich auch die kleinste Änderung des Gesichtsausdrucks einfangen lässt.


Zwei Live View-Systeme steigern Flexibilität und Funktionalität

Wie bereits die Modelle der 300er Serie, verfügen auch die α500 und die α550 über den schnellen und komfortablen Quick AF Live View. Neu ist allerdings, dass dieser Modus auch eine Gesichtserkennung mit Schärfepriorität plus Belichtung auf Gesichter ermöglicht und so für eine besonders natürliche Hauttonwiedergabe sorgt. Auch die Smile Shutter-Funktion wurde erstmalig in eine Sony DSLR-Kamera integriert – sie löst automatisch aus, sobald eine Person im Bild lächelt.

Der neue Live View-Modus, speziell zur manuellen Schärfekontrolle, nutzt im Gegensatz zum Quick AF Live View den CMOS-Hauptbildsensor. Diese Live View Darstellung zeigt ein hundertprozentiges Bild und bietet ein Gitternetz zur einfachen Ausrichtung der Bildkomposition. Eine sieben bzw. 14fache Vergrößerungsansicht erleichtert die Beurteilung der Schärfe und zeigt selbst bei geringem Umgebungslicht ein gut sichtbares Bild auf dem LC-Display.

Beide Modelle sind mit einem über einen Bereich von 180 Grad schwenkbaren drei Zoll LCD ausgestattet und erlauben spielend einfach neue Betrachtungsperspektiven. Ein Umgebungslichtsensor passt automatisch die Monitorhelligkeit an das Umgebungslicht an. Bei der α500 handelt es sich um einen scharfen und kontrastreichen Clear Photo LCD Plus Monitor mit 230.400 Punkten. Die α550 verfügt über ein Xtra Fine LC-Display, das mit 921.600 Punkten eine hervorragende Beurteilung von Farbe, Kontrast und Bilddetails bietet. Der besonders helle optische Sucher zeigt bei beiden Modellen 95 Prozent des Bildes an.


Szenen mit großem Dynamikumfang – kein Problem!

Die α500 und α550 bieten zwei Möglichkeiten, große Helligkeitsunterschiede innerhalb einer Aufnahmeszene in den Griff zu bekommen.

Wo bisher viel Geduld, ein Stativ und die entsprechende Bildbearbeitungssoftware für HDR-Aufnahmen (High Dynamic Range) nötig waren, hilft nun die in die Kamera integrierte Auto HDR-Funktion. Zwei Bilder werden mit unterschiedlichen Belichtungseinstellungen aufgenommen und zu einem Bild kombiniert. Die α500 und α550 verwenden spezielle Bildbearbeitungs-Algorithmen, um die beiden Aufnahmen in sehr kurzer Zeit zu einem Bild zusammenzufügen. Ein möglicher Versatz, der bei Aufnahmen aus freier Hand entstehen kann, wird dabei direkt ausgeglichen. Das Ergebnis ist ein HDR-Bild mit beeindruckend realistischen Tonwertnuancen, ohne die Notwendigkeit von Computer oder Stativ. Diese Funktion eignet sich besonders bei der Aufnahme von unbewegten Motiven.

Außerdem können komplexe Gegenlichtszenen und andere kontrastreiche Motive mit der weiterentwickelten Dynamikbereichsoptimierung nun noch besser eingefangen werden. Der BIONZ™ Prozessor optimiert die Bilddaten in Echtzeit und passt Helligkeit sowie Kontrast in verschiedenen Bildbereichen direkt an. So werden ausgeglichen belichtete, natürlich wirkende Ergebnisse erzielt. Die Stärke der Dynamikbereichsoptimierung kann dabei in fünf Stufen angepasst werden. Diese Funktion bietet sich bei bewegten Motiven an und ist auch in der Serienbildfunktion wählbar.


Praktische und komfortable Ausstattung

Wie alle anderen α DSLR-Kameras verfügen auch die beiden neuen Modelle über SteadyShot INSIDE™, einen integrierten Bildstabilisator, der in Kombination mit jedem α Objektiv funktioniert. Er erlaubt bis zu vier Lichtwerte längere Verschlusszeiten und somit mehr kreativen Spielraum bei Freihandaufnahmen.


Der Smart-Telekonverter verlängert die aktuelle Brennweite um den Faktor 1,4 bzw. zwei auf Tastendruck und ermöglicht die formatfüllende Abbildung entfernter Motive.

Beide Kameras verfügen außerdem über ein außergewöhnlich effizientes Energie-Management. Die α500 leistet etwa 1.000 Aufnahmen mit einer Akkuladung (gemessen nach CIPA-Standard) und die α550 löst mit einer Akkuladung bis zu 950-mal aus. Das bietet genügend Kapazität für ausgedehnte Fotoshootings.

Ein BRAVIA™ Fernseher, oder ein anderes High Definition TV-Gerät, kann zusammen mit den beiden neuen Modellen für beeindruckende Bildpräsentationen verwendet werden. Eine optimale Bilddarstellung ist auf BRAVIA™ Fernsehern dank der PhotoTV HD-Funktion möglich. Über eine als Zubehör erhältliche Fernbedienung kann die Präsentation auf dem Bildschirm komfortabel gesteuert werden. Ein zum Anschluss benötigtes HDMI-Kabel ist ebenfalls als Zubehör verfügbar.


Optionales Zubehör und SD-Kartenslot

Die neuen Kameramodelle verfügen neben dem bekannten Sony Memory Stick-Slot ganz neu auch über einen zusätzlichen Slot für SD/SDHC-Speicherkarten1. Die optional verfügbare und besonders schnelle HX-Serie bietet Kapazitäten von acht bis 32 Gigabyte. Für die neuen DSLR-Modelle bietet sich besonders der Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™ HX mit 32 Gigabyte Speicherkapazität an. Er erlaubt einen extra schnellen Datentransfer von bis zu 20 Megabyte pro Sekunde und die Aufnahme von tausenden hochauflösenden Bildern.

Der optional verfügbare Handgriff VG-B50AM fasst zwei zusätzliche Akkus (NP-FM500H) und erhöht damit die Zahl der Aufnahmen bei der α500 auf 2.000 und bei der α550 auf 1.900 Bilder.

Neben dem bereits genannten Zubehör stehen auch eine Reihe attraktiver Accessoires, ein neuer Objektivadapter und neue Carl Zeiss T* Filter zur Verfügung.

Sharing powerful on-chip noise reduction techniques with the full-frame DSLR-A900, this advanced sensor works with processing algorithms handled by the high-speed BIONZ™ engine to deliver premium images plus razor-sharp shooting responses. Dramatically reduced picture noise now allows super-sensitive shooting at up to ISO12800, allowing attractive results when shooting handheld in challenging situations like candlelit interiors.

Thanks to the powerful BIONZ image processing engine, Quick AF Live View now supports even speedier shooting responses with rapid, precise autofocus. This makes it easier than ever to capture beautifully relaxed portraits, dynamic action shots and more.

Powered by the BIONZ image processing engine, fast-moving action can now be captured effortlessly with faster continuous shooting speeds. Low-noise images can be previewed directly from the CMOS sensor, allowing critical assessment of focus and fine detail, even in low light. The live image offers 100% field coverage, assisted by framing grid lines for precise composition. There’s also a selectable 7x/14x zoom function for a close-up confirmation of focus.

The A500 offers a crisp, high-contrast 3.0 type Clear Photo LCD Plus screen with the same tilt range for clear, comfortable composition and reviewing shots.

The A550 features a superb (921k dot) 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD screen for critical focusing and photo-quality viewing with class-leading colour, contrast and detailing. The screen tilts up or down over a full 180 degree range, allowing uncompromised ‘free-angle’ live view shooting in any position. An ambient light sensor automatically boosts LCD brightness for extra screen clarity when surrounding light levels are high while both cameras also feature a clear, bright optical viewfinder with wide 95% field coverage for framing and focusing as an alternative to live view shooting.

Operation of both cameras is brilliantly simple, thanks to a redesigned on-screen interface that provides easy access to functions and settings during live view operation. A unique Graphic Display gives a clear, intuitive indication of how shutter speed and aperture adjustments will affect the final image.

Creative options are broadened by new Auto HDR mode that captures a huge range of shadow and highlight detail in landscapes, interiors and other scenes. Previously accessible only to enthusiasts equipped with a tripod and image processing software, HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a specialist technique that combines two frames shot at different exposure settings. The A500 and A550 use powerful algorithms to combine and optimise two successive frames in less than 10 seconds, correcting any misalignment between frames when shooting handheld. The result is a single HDR image emulating the huge natural tonal range of human vision – with no PC or tripod needed.

The D-Range Optimiser featured in previous DSLR models has been enhanced for even better results with backlit portraits and other tricky high-contrast scenes. The powerful BIONZ engine now optimises image data in real time, processing brightness and contrast in individual areas of each exposure for balanced, natural looking results. Optimisation can also be selected manually from 5 processing levels.

A Smart Teleconvertor button instantly boosts image size by 1.4x or 2x to etend your camera’s zoom lens range further for frame-filling close-ups.

Like all DSLR cameras by Sony, both new models feature SteadyShot™ INSIDE, the powerful optical image stabiliser that cuts the effects of camera shake by up to 4 stops while shooting handheld with any lens.

After shooting, it’s easy to to connect both cameras to your BRAVIA™ television via HDMI (requires optional cable) for a stunning big-screen view of your shots. Compatible BRAVIA™ models automatically switch to PhotoTV HD mode for optimised still image playback with incredible detail, colour and clarity. SAN DIEGO, Aug. 27, 2009 – Sony today introduced two α (alpha) DSLR cameras with a new generation of Exmor™ CMOS sensors and BIONZ™ image processors, which make it easy for active shooters to get the best shot and capture clearer images—without missing their favorite moments.

The α550 (14.2 megapixels) and α500 (12.3 megapixels) cameras provide excellent picture quality, particularly in low-light scenarios. A new generation of Sony® Exmor CMOS image sensors employ new low-noise processing for high-quality pictures. The BIONZ image processor has color-noise reduction that helps achieve low noise up to ISO 12800, without sacrificing fine detail.

"We are bringing performance of a higher class of cameras within the reach of a broader group of consumers," said Mark Weir, senior manager of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. "Not only do these cameras provide great value, but they also bring faster shooting speeds and new technologies like in-camera High Dynamic Range and new Live View features to mainstream photo enthusiasts."

Fast Shooting Speeds

With its unique sensor-processor combination, the α550 camera is the first DSLR in its class with seven frames per second shooting speed for under $1,000. Using the optical viewfinder on both models, you can shoot up to five frames per second and up to four frames per second with Quick Auto Focus Live View. This helps you capture the decisive moment when shooting fast moving subjects like in sports.

In-Camera High Dynamic Range

These are Sony’s first DSLR cameras that offer an in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature for capturing highlights and shadows, which processes the image within two seconds. Unlike HDR features in other DSLR cameras, Sony’s unique positional interpolation technology can overcome slight changes in camera position and align individual shots so that a tripod is not required.

The feature handles severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes like looking out a window into bright daylight. The in-camera auto HDR technology combines the highlight and shadow detail of two separate captures into one remarkably natural looking image.

Improved Live View

Because composing shots on the LCD monitor is becoming increasingly important to DSLR users, Sony has equipped these cameras with two Live View functions and a 3-inch (measured diagonally) LCD screen that tilts 90 degrees up or down. The α500 has a 230,000 dot Clear Photo LCD Plus™ screen, and the α550 has a 921,000 dot Xtra Fine LCD™ display.

Sony’s Quick AF Live View uses two sensors to maintain the same focusing speed as with the optical viewfinder. While the speed of Quick AF Live View is ideal for every day shooting, Manual Focus Check Live View enables critical framing and magnification for setting precise manual focus in macro and tripod shooting. Temporary 7x and 14x zoom views enable you to focus on extremely fine detail while the 1x view shows 100 percent framing in the LCD.

The Quick Auto Focus Live View has been developed with Face Detection technology to help you get the best shot by recognizing and adjusting for faces. It is the world’s first Face Detection system to work with fast, high-precision "phase detection" Auto Focus. By tracking up to eight faces, this system can prioritize auto focus points on a face, and optimize exposure and white balance for beautiful portraits.

These are Sony’s first DSLR cameras that include Smile ShutterTM technology in Live View, which takes the shot when your subject smiles. It works with Quick Auto Focus Live View to capture spontaneous moments.

Image stabilization helps take blur-free shots by compensating for camera shake. Typical DSLR systems build image stabilization into selected lenses only. SteadyShot INSIDE™ image stabilization is built into the camera body itself. Blur will also be reduced with every A-mount lens, including macro and wide aperture standard zoom lenses, with an effect equivalent to shutter speeds faster by 2.5 to 4 stops

To make the benefits of macro photography easier and more accessible, Sony is making available at retail the DT 30mm F/2.8 (model SAL30M28) macro lens. It captures intricate close-ups, which is difficult to achieve with standard lenses and is only compatible with APS-C format DSLRs.

Memory Cards

For higher capacity storage with greater connectivity and faster transfer speeds, the new DSLRs are compatible with Sony’s newest 32GB Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™ HX media. The HX series card is designed to deliver optimal read and write speeds for a growing number of products that require high-bandwidth memory in order to capture and store large data files.

Using the HX series media, Sony α (alpha) DSLR users can confidently enjoy advanced features such as continuous-shooting photography and realize higher transfer rates of large capacity files to their compatible PC (via supplied USB adapter). For example with the α550 model, approximately 1500 14-megapixel photos shot in the JPEG+RAW mode can be transferred to a compatible PC in approximately 26 minutes (HX series media sold separately).

The new cameras include dedicated slots for high-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo™, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™, HX series and SD/SDHC media (all sold separately).


Pricing and Availability

The α550 (model DSLR-A550) and α500 (model DSLR-A500), which come with the camera body only, will cost about $950 and $750 respectively. The α550L and α500L, which come with the camera body and 18-55 kit lens, will cost about $1050 and $850, respectively. The SAL30M28 macro lens will be available for about $200.

Genau wie in der Presseankündigung für die DSLR-A850 ist hier von zwei zusätzlichen Akkus die Rede, obwohl bei der Montage des VG-B50AM die Kamerabatterie entfernt werden muß, also nur insgesamt zwei Akkus möglich sind. Das liegt im suboptimalen "Schornsteindesign" des Griffs begründet.

In der Vergleichstabelle zwischen der DSLR-A550 und der DSLR-A500 wird der Zwillingsblitz unter einer falschen Artikelnummer geführt:

Sony Alpha Zwillingsblitz: "HVL‐M24AM" -> HVL‐MT24AM

Bei der Auflistung der Zubehörteile wie PCK-LH6AM (Plexiglas-Displayprotector) und PCK-LS7AM (Display-Schutzfolie) und SH-L2AM (Display-Sonnenblende) fehlt die Augenmuschel FDA-EP6AM.
